AN Railway — Port St. Joe Line
FL · Port St. Joe → Telogia
The Panhandle's paper-mill railroad, gone quiet in the pines.
Heads up: Rated poor. The line is still owned and leased by a railroad, so get permission before riding.
The Apalachicola Northern Railroad was founded in 1903 and ran about 96 miles from Port St. Joe north to Chattahoochee, with a spur to Apalachicola. For most of the 20th century it hauled pulpwood and paper for the big mill at Port St. Joe.
In 2002 the line's owner, the St. Joe Company, leased it to the AN Railway, later part of Genesee & Wyoming. With the paper mill long closed, much of the line has gone out of use. The rails still run for miles through the flatwoods and the Apalachicola National Forest.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
