Nickel Plate — Frankfort to Kokomo

IN · Frankfort → Kokomo

A Nickel Plate line fading into the Indiana cornfields.

Heads up: Rated poor. Norfolk Southern-era track; get permission before riding.

The New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, better known as the Nickel Plate Road, ran across the Midwest from 1881 until it merged into the Norfolk & Western in 1964. Its network across Indiana included former Lake Erie & Western lines like this one through Frankfort and Kokomo.

The line became part of Norfolk Southern in 1982. This stretch is now out of service, and the rails sit in the grass between the two towns.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
