NKC Railway — St. Francis to Nebraska
KS · Saint Francis, KS → Harlan County, NE
High Plains grain rails, from Kansas across into Nebraska.
Heads up: Rated fair. Owned by an operating railroad, so trains could return. Get permission.
Branch lines like this one were built to reach the grain elevators in every small town on the High Plains. This one was part of the Burlington system and later Burlington Northern.
The lines in southwest Nebraska, northern Kansas and northeast Colorado are now run by the Nebraska Kansas Colorado Railway, owned by OmniTRAX. It mostly hauls grain and coal over about 500 miles of track. Parts of the network like this one have gone out of use, with the rails still beside the old elevators.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
