Catron's Creek Spur — Harlan County

KY · Liggett → Dressen

A coal spur up a Harlan County hollow, waiting on coal that stopped coming.

Heads up: Rated poor. Railroad-owned spur in coal country. Get permission, and watch for steep banks along the creek.

Harlan County's hollows were threaded with railroad spurs built to haul coal out of the mines. This one runs up Catron's Creek and was part of the CSX system.

As the mines closed, the coal trains stopped. The spur is out of service, but the rails are still in place along the creek.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
