Mountain Division — Westbrook to Conway
ME · Westbrook, ME → Conway, NH
The Maine Central's road to the White Mountains, waiting since 1983.
Heads up: Rated good, but it's state-owned and parts may be turned into a trail. Get permission, and stay off the active excursion section in New Hampshire.
The Mountain Division ran from Portland through the western Maine mountains and New Hampshire's White Mountains to St. Johnsbury, Vermont. It was one of the Maine Central's showpiece lines, famous for its route through Crawford Notch.
Guilford, the Maine Central's successor, abandoned the line in 1983. The states bought the corridor, and the rails were left in place. Excursion trains still run on part of it in New Hampshire. In Maine, a 2023 law allows the track between Fryeburg and Standish to be removed for a trail-until-rail path, so check before you go.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
