White Pine Subdivision — Michigan to Wisconsin
MI · Carp Lake Township, MI → Morse, WI
North Woods main lines, quiet since CN let them go.
Heads up: Rated impassable. A railroad still owns it and has studied restarting service. Get permission.
The Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic and the Wisconsin Central built these lines across the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin to haul copper, iron, timber and paper. They later became part of the Soo Line and the modern Wisconsin Central, which CN bought in 2001.
CN stopped service on the White Pine line in 2014 and on the Ashland–Park Falls stretch in 2018. Both were discontinuances, not abandonments, so the rails stayed. Watco's Fox Valley & Lake Superior railroad bought the lines in 2021 and looked at bringing trains back in 2023, but they're still out of service.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
