NKC Railway — Southwest Nebraska Branch
NE · Gosper County → Lincoln County
Prairie grain rails between the Platte and the Republican.
Heads up: Rated fair. Owned by an operating railroad. Get permission.
The Burlington built branches across southwest Nebraska to reach the grain elevators in every small town. They became part of Burlington Northern and were later sold to regional short lines.
Today the Nebraska Kansas Colorado Railway runs about 500 miles of these old lines, mostly hauling grain and coal. Some parts, like this one, are out of use, with the rails still in place across the prairie.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
