Elk River Railroad — Elk Industrial Track
WV · Riffle → Gilmer
B&O rails following the rivers of central West Virginia.
Heads up: Rated poor. Railroad-owned. Get permission first.
The Baltimore & Ohio built lines up the river valleys of central West Virginia to reach coal and timber. After the B&O became part of CSX, many of these branches were sold to short lines.
This stretch has been run by short lines including the Elk River Railroad and the Appalachian & Ohio, and is now out of service. Street View shows the rails still running along the valley.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
