Illinois & Midland — Taylorville to Tovey
IL · Taylorville → Tovey
A coal railroad's branch, with a tree growing between the rails.
Heads up: Rated poor. Owned by an operating railroad. Get permission first.
The Chicago & Illinois Midland was a coal-hauling railroad in central Illinois. At its peak it ran about 120 route-miles and was briefly big enough to count as a Class I railroad.
In 1996 Genesee & Wyoming bought it and renamed it the Illinois & Midland. This stretch near Taylorville is out of service. One crossing on Street View shows a young tree growing right between the rails.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
