Sunflour Railroad — Rosholt Line
SD · Rosholt → Claire City
A tiny prairie short line from 1913.
Heads up: Rated good, but it's owned by a short line that may still run grain trains at times. Get permission.
In 1913 the Fairmount & Veblen Railway built south from Fairmount, North Dakota, to Rosholt, South Dakota, and then west toward Claire City and Veblen to serve the grain towns of the area.
Today what's left belongs to the Sunflour Railroad, which owns about 19 miles of track between Rosholt and Claire City and connects with the Canadian Pacific at Rosholt. OpenStreetMap lists this stretch as disused, with the rails still running out past the grain elevators.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
