Milford & Bennington — Wilton to Bennington
NH · Wilton → Bennington
A Boston & Maine branch through the New Hampshire woods.
Heads up: Rated good, but a short line may still use it. Get permission, and watch for trains.
This line was part of the Boston & Maine's Hillsboro Branch through southern New Hampshire. Passenger trains stopped running in the 1930s, and the State of New Hampshire later bought the corridor.
Since 1987 the Milford-Bennington Railroad has used about 18 miles of it between Wilton and Bennington to haul gravel, sand and aggregate. From 2003 to 2006 the Wilton Scenic Railroad ran excursion trains between Wilton and Greenfield. The line is listed as disused now, but the short line may still run here, so it's not truly abandoned.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
