East Millinocket Branch

ME · Medway → East Millinocket

A paper-mill branch waiting on the mill.

Heads up: Rated fair. Owned by Eastern Maine Railway, which runs trains on the main line nearby, so get permission and watch for activity.

The Bangor & Aroostook built this short branch to serve Great Northern Paper's East Millinocket mill, one of the big newsprint mills that made the Katahdin region. Great Northern was once one of the largest landowners in Maine.

The East Millinocket mill shut down for good in 2014, and the trains stopped with it. Eastern Maine Railway (owned by J.D. Irving) bought the branch in 2022 along with the main line. Maine has federal money to bring rail back to the nearby Millinocket mill site, so keep an eye on this one.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
