Old CNJ Main — High Bridge to Phillipsburg

NJ · High Bridge → Phillipsburg

The Jersey Central's old road west.

Heads up: Rated fair. Owned by NJ Transit, and freight railroads run nearby, so get permission first.

The Central Railroad of New Jersey ran its main line west from Jersey City through High Bridge to Phillipsburg on the Delaware River, where it met the Lehigh Valley lines into Pennsylvania. The CNJ went bankrupt and became part of Conrail in 1976.

NJ Transit now owns this western stretch, beyond the end of its Raritan Valley Line trains. There has been talk of extending passenger service west to Phillipsburg, but nothing has been funded. The rails are still in place through the woods and small towns.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
