NYS&W Utica Main Line — Chenango Forks to Sangerfield
NY · Chenango Forks → Sangerfield
The Lackawanna's road to Utica, gone quiet.
Heads up: Rated good. Still owned by the NYS&W, which runs trains on other lines nearby, so get permission first.
The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western built this branch north from Binghamton toward Utica to reach the farms and mills of the Chenango Valley. After Conrail, the New York, Susquehanna & Western (the "Susie-Q") took it over as its Utica Main Line.
The Susquehanna still runs a big freight network from New Jersey into New York, but this long stretch north of Chenango Forks has sat out of service. At about 60 miles with roughly 25 bridges, it is one of the longer unused lines with rails left in the Northeast.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
