Erie Branch — New Albion to South Dayton
NY · New Albion → South Dayton
The little Erie branch that made it into the movies.
Heads up: Rated fair. Privately owned, so get permission first.
This branch was built as part of the Erie Railroad's web of lines across New York's Southern Tier. After the Erie faded, the New York & Lake Erie Railroad ran freight and excursion trains on it out of Gowanda.
Hollywood found it too: the old depot at South Dayton appears in The Natural (1984) and Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987). The trains have since stopped, and the rails sit unused through the hills.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
