The Heber Creeper's lost lower half.

Heads up: The Heber Valley Railroad is active above Vivian Park.

The Denver & Rio Grande Western finished its Provo Canyon Branch between Provo and Heber City in September 1899. The trains crawled up the canyon so slowly that locals nicknamed the line the "Heber Creeper." It carried livestock, farm goods and passengers until regular service ended in 1967.

The line was saved as a tourist railroad, which reopened in 1970–71. But the lower part of the canyon was cut off: the D&RGW pulled up the rails at the Provo end around 1971. Later the track between Vivian Park and Bridal Veil Falls came out in 1996, and the Provo–Vivian Park stretch became the Provo River Parkway trail.

Today the Heber Valley Railroad runs excursions from Heber City down to Vivian Park, and this lower grade is the abandoned piece below it. Personally scouted by Eli.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
