Astoria Line — Portland & Western (West End)

OR · Wauna → Astoria

The railroad to the mouth of the Columbia.

Heads up: Portland & Western runs ACTIVE freight to industries east of here (Wauna/Port Westward) — stay on the dormant west end.

Railroad builders in the late 1890s pushed a line down the Columbia River from Portland to Astoria, and it became part of James J. Hill's Spokane, Portland & Seattle system. It carried lumber, canned salmon and summer crowds heading to the beaches at Seaside.

The line passed to Burlington Northern and later to the Portland & Western. Traffic now stops at industries upriver, and the Astoria end, with its trestles over sloughs and marshes, has fallen out of use.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
