Circle Branch — Glendive to Circle

A wheat branch that stopped in 2001 but was never torn up.

Built in the homestead era to reach the farms of McCone County, the Circle branch left the main line at Glendive and ran northwest to Circle. Its business was almost entirely wheat — around 680 carloads left Circle in 1999.

By then the branch was worn out, with trains limited to 10 mph. Operations ended in 2001. Montana studied the line as an at-risk branch, but BNSF chose to keep it rather than abandon it, and the rails are still in place.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
