Sacramento Southern — Freeport to Hood
CA · Freeport → Hood
A Delta fruit line along the Sacramento River levee.
Heads up: The State Railroad Museum runs excursion trains on the northern ~3 miles out of Old Sacramento — stay south of that section.
The Sacramento Southern was a Southern Pacific subsidiary, built in the early 1900s down the east bank of the Sacramento River. It served the farm towns and packing sheds of the Delta, carrying pears, asparagus and other produce to market.
Truck competition slowly killed the traffic. California State Parks now owns the northern end, where the State Railroad Museum runs weekend excursion trains about three miles south from Old Sacramento. This section, farther south past the excursion turnaround, is out of use.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
