Varina Branch — Fuquay-Varina to Brickhaven
NC · Fuquay-Varina → Brickhaven
A suburban branch that time passed by.
Heads up: Rated impassable. Norfolk Southern owns it and live track meets it in Fuquay-Varina, so stay off without permission.
This branch runs west from Fuquay-Varina, a fast-growing town south of Raleigh, toward Brickhaven on the Cape Fear River in Chatham County. Its last big job was carrying coal ash to a landfill at Brickhaven.
The trains have stopped, and new neighborhoods are growing up around the old line. Norfolk Southern still owns it, and active track meets it at Fuquay-Varina.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
