Llano Line — Fairland to Llano

TX · Fairland → Llano

The granite line into the Texas Hill Country.

Heads up: Rated fair. Owned by Capital Metro with freight trains running nearby, so get permission first.

The Austin & Northwestern built west from Austin in the 1880s, reaching Burnet and then Llano. It hauled the pink granite used to build the Texas State Capitol. Southern Pacific later took it over, and in 1986 Capital Metro and the City of Austin bought it to keep the corridor.

The stretch from Fairland to Llano was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, with 43 historic structures. Freight still runs on Capital Metro's line closer to Austin and Marble Falls, but this end is unused. A volunteer group hopes to fix about 10 miles near Llano for rides someday.

⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
