Built to reach the loggers' camps, silenced when the last mill closed.
Heads up: The Orofino end connects to the ACTIVE BG&CM line along the Clearwater — stay off the main line.
The Camas Prairie Railroad, jointly owned by the Northern Pacific and Union Pacific, built this line up from Orofino to reach the Clearwater Timber Company's logging camps at Headquarters. It was completed in 1928 and ran on a stiff grade with many bridges.
For decades it hauled logs and plywood. Its last big customer was Potlatch's Jaype plywood mill near Pierce, which closed in 2000. With no traffic left, the line fell out of service. Watco's Great Northwest Railroad inherited it as its 4th Subdivision but has not run trains here since.
⚠️ Before you go: every railroad on this map is private property. A line that looks abandoned may still be owned by a railroad, used to store rail cars, or put back into service at any time — sometimes with no warning. Before going near any track, make sure it's truly abandoned (no recent use, rails not polished, no signals or cars stored on it) and that you're allowed to be there. Never assume a track is dead.
